Membership Extension: Recruiting, Orientation
Membership Support: Retention

“Membership is the Lifeblood of the Club”

The Membership Committee is responsible for planning, recruiting, orienting, supporting and retaining members of our Club. Our first role is to ensure that each Rotarian has sufficient collateral, promotional material, and understanding of the membership process that he/she can be an effective voice in attracting qualified and committed new Rotarians. Membership is truly the responsibility of each member of the Club. Club 31 has an impressive record of achievements and contributions in the Rotary world. In order to continue this legacy, each Rotarian needs to take personal responsibility for bringing men and women into the Club who are committed to ‘Service Above Self '. A key task of the Membership Committee is to facilitate this process.

The Membership Committee is the first step in the Rotary experience. With the help of members, we recruit and orient the new member in the work of Denver Rotary and Rotary International with several meetings of the New Member Council. We also have the responsibility of helping current members sustain their interest in the work of Rotary through efforts in retention and fellowship as the Family of Rotary.

We are organized in two programs: (1) Membership Extension, (Recruiting and New Member Orientation), and (2) Membership Support (Retention).

MEMBERSHIP EXTENSION

Recruiting

The Rotary Club of Denver (RCD) has enjoyed membership growth since it was chartered in 1911. Today our membership is approximately 360. Currently, RCD enjoys the status of being one of the “Large Clubs” among over 32,000 clubs in 169 countries in the world. At our peak, we had over 600 members in the late 1990's; and with renewed effort we can again attract a significant number of community and business leaders to join this outstanding Club.

However, as with any organization, there is an annual attrition and RCD is no exception. This means that this committee is the lifeblood of our club. Committee members must develop and implement plans to seek new members who meet the RCD membership criteria. Even more importantly, committee members are active recruiters of potential members. Our charge in selecting new members from the leadership of the Denver community is to seek broad representation in age groups with diversity in ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

New Member Orientation

The New Member Council Committee is the gateway for new members to fully experience and understand all the opportunities that are available to help them enjoy their membership in Rotary.

This is the committee that arranges regular orientation meetings, tracks new members, assigns mentors and makes sure new members understand basic Rotary policies including Club and Foundation programs and projects. Also, it's a good idea for these committee members to have fairly good understanding of the committees and what they do so that new members can be advised and directed according to their interests.

MEMBERSHIP SUPPORT

Retention

This Committee will develop a Strategy for recognizing both new and existing Denver Rotarians who are “at risk” in dropping their membership and implement a program of closer involvement in the Programs, Committees, and other work of the Club so those members have a more fulfilling Rotary experience. In addition, the committee will interview all members who have sent resignation letters to try and salvage the membership or recruit a new member from the same organization.

Denver Rotary Membership

Membership Means Relationships

The Denver Rotary Club is a service organization that provides an opportunity for its members to have a significant impact on the community whether it is local, national, or international. As a member of the Denver Rotary club you will be in a unique position to truly create value for individuals and families as well as build life long relationships with leaders and professional in diverse fields throughout the world. It is through these relationships that members are able to expand on their personal goals and objectives because the sum of the parts is far greater than any individual effort.

The Denver Rotary club is one of 32,000 Rotary clubs that have over 1.2 million members located in 169 countries and communities around the world.  As a result, it is a safe bet that wherever you travel, you will have the opportunity to meet and socialize with fellow Rotarians. This is important because our membership list consist of some of the most distinguished professionals and leaders in their chosen fields, and if you satisfy the membership requirements, you will join an organization that has a tremendous history of accomplishment. Because in the end, it is our membership that is our most important asset and our membership means relationships.

Membership Goals

Given the excellent quality of our membership and high standards we have held for membership over the years, it is a primary goal to continue in that tradition. For this fiscal year we will continue to fill our membership from those traditional ranks.  In addition, we will also seek to supplement our existing membership from non-traditional areas. First, because our society is becoming increasingly more diverse, it is our desire to increase our membership diversity as well. As a result, we will focus on bringing in 50 new members under the age of 50 and expand on our existing diversification. We feel these goals will provide the foundation for Rotary to continue its long history of success well into the future.

What Our Members have to say about becoming a Member of the Denver Rotary Club:

Roland Thornton, Executive Vice President Qwest Communications International
- I am a member of Rotary because when I moved to Denver a few years ago I wanted to get connected to the business community and to look for opportunities to make a difference. My first thought was to join the Rotary and I am very pleased I did. It has been a very rewarding experience and I am very proud to be part of an organization that does such goodwill around the world.
